After Almaty won the bid to host the 2017 Winter Universiade and also the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, city authorities were puzzled by the construction of a new sports club built according to new standards and the latest architectural trends. Almaty Arena is a palace of sports and culture. It hosts various classes in hockey, boxing, mini-football, figure skating, karate and other sports for both children and adults. Large-scale sports competitions are also held here.
The city's Ice Palace has become the second largest sports complex in the former Soviet Union. The area of the building is more than 9 hectares. Almaty Arena itself consists of three parts - the Ice Arena, which can accommodate 12 thousand spectators, a skating rink, a health complex and a swimming pool.
