Tasmajdan Stadium

Description

The named stadium was opened in 1954 after two years of construction. It is located on the site of a former quarry and got its name from the Turkish words meaning "stone" and "mine, mine". The stadium has a capacity of 10,000 seats, there are two halls and a gym inside. It is often used for mini-football, volleyball, basketball, handball, as well as for concerts and other entertainment events. During the winter months from 1953 to 1977, the stadium was used for ice hockey. It hosted the Yugoslav ice hockey championships, as well as matches of various Belgrade clubs. The first significant competition held at the stadium was the 1954 European Women's Basketball Championship. In 1957, the first women's World Handball Championship was held there, as well as Davis Cup matches in 1956. In addition, unusual events were held at the stadium, such as Spanish bullfighting and car football with a big ball. Over time, the stadium fell into poor condition due to lack of investment. In 2011, a complete reconstruction of the stadium began, which lasted almost five years. The final opening took place only in April 2016 with a concert attended by famous musical groups. In July of the same year, a Davis Cup tennis match was held at the stadium.
